Two people were taken to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition on Saturday evening after their vehicle hit a bridge on State Highway 8 near Glenore in Otago.

A St John spokesperson said one of the patients was flown to the hospital by rescue helicopter; the other was taken by ambulance.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency reported at 7.42pm that the Manuka Gorge Highway section of SH8 was closed at the Tokomairiro River (Mt Stuart) Bridge.

At 8.08pm, Waka Kotahi reported that the road had reopened but urged drivers to take “extra care”.

A police spokesperson said the bridge was damaged by the impact of the crash.
