A large tree has fallen onto parked cars by Christchurch’s Hagley Park

A large tree has fallen onto parked cars in Christchurch’s North Hagley Park.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 11.52am Saturday on Harper Ave.

The tree was blocking the road on Harper Ave and policed advised motorists to avoid the westbound lanes.

A police spokesperson said they believe no-one was in the parked cars.

“Contractors have been advised, but the tree is likely to take some time to be removed,” they said.

The fallen tree was a maritime pine that was planted in 1870. It fell onto a parked Subaru and crushed the front of the car.

Nearby a football game was in progress when it happened.

Two fire crews from Christchurch station and one from Ilam are at the scene.

The tree is blocking the road.
